Att umgås med folk…

Vi har ju den stora äran att känna en massa trevliga människor här i Thailand. Däribland en massa svenskar som bor och jobbar här.

Eftersom en av våra goa vänner, Lennart ”Lelle” Persson driver ett par hotell och har en bar som heter ”Lelles bar” brukar detta bli den naturliga träffpunkten för oss. Alltid när man varit någonstans och är på väg hem så svänger vi in om Lelles bar för att se om någon som vi känner är där.

Nu drar det dessutom ihop sig till jul. Och som alla andra utlänningar i ett annat land så samlas man tillsammans med sina landsmän för att fira. Här i Patong förbereds julen för fullt. Det rullas köttbullar hemma hos Lelle och någon annan har till uppgift att göra Janssons frestelse och skinka och allt annat gott som brukar finnas på ett svenskt julbord.


Lelle hade en lista i baren där man kunde anmäla sig till julbordet på baren på julafton. För en vecka sedan fick han ta ned den eftersom den redan var fulltecknad. Det finns bara plats till runt 40 personer i baren.

Vi har fått ned delar av vår familj, Kjells stora flicka Linda och hennes son Luka. Det känns kul att de kommit för att fira jul med oss här nere.

På julafton kommer ett par mycket goda vänner till oss för att stanna till en vecka in i januari. Det skall också bli jättekul. Man saknar sina nära o kära när man inte varit hemma på ett tag.

När jag ser människor med utländsk bakgrund i Sverige, som samlas tillsammans och bor i samma kvarter och som vill vara nära de sina så kan jag lite förstå varför. Vi gör lika dant när vi befinner oss utomlands, vi söker oss till de som liknar oss, talar samma språk, och har samma seder. Alla högtider firas tillsammans med landsmän eller i alla fall folk från de länder som firar någorlunda liknande högtider. Visst är det kul att ta del av andras traditioner och att få dela med sig av sina egna, men oftast så är vi så upptagna av själva firandet att vi kanske glömmer att bjuda in, eller inte har tid att låta oss bjudas in. Men om vi blev bättre på det så kanske förståelsen för andras seder och bruk blev större. Så kanske skall vi börja med det nu och bjuda in någon den här julen…

Jag hoppas i alla fall att alla tar det riktigt lugnt i jul och inte shoppar över sina tillgångar vilket är väldigt lätt. För några jular sedan räknade vi ut att det blev billigare att bjuda hela familjen på julbord på en restaurang, än att köpa hem allt till ett julbord hemma. Då slipper man att ta hand om alla resterna och man slipper äta julmat i en hel vecka och man slipper dessutom att kasta över hälften av maten som man inte orkat äta upp och som därför blivit för gammal.

Gå ut o ät julbord tillsammans och umgås med varandra istället den tiden ni vinner nu när ni slipper rulla 7 000 köttbullar och göra Janssons frestelse och griljera skinka och allt annat som ni skulle haft.

Simma lugnt i julhelgen och njut av de lediga dagar som ni har…

To socialize with people…

We have the great honor to know a lot of nice people here in Thailand. Among them a bunch of Swedes who live and work here.
One of our very good friends, Lennart “Lelle” Persson runs a couple of hotels and has a bar named “Lelles bar” usually this is the natural meeting point for us. Whenever you been somewhere and are on their way home we turn into Lelles bar to see if anyone we know is there.

Now it´s soon Christmas. And like all other foreigners in another country we gathered together with our countrymen to celebrate. Here in Patong everyone is doing something for Christmas. Somebody is making meatballs in Lelles kitchen, and another is to make “Jansson’s temptation” a Swedish specialty whit potatoes and herring, somebody is preparing the ham and all the other good things you can find on a Swedish Christmas table.

Lelle had a list in the bar where you could sign up for the Christmas dinner at the bar on Christmas. A week ago he got to take it down because it was already fully subscribed. There is only space for around 40 people in the bar.

We have brought down part of our family, Kjell big girl Linda and her son, Luka. It feels great they come to celebrate Christmas with us down here.
On Christmas Eve, a few very good friends of us are coming and they stay to one week in to January. It should also be fun. You miss the loved and dear friends and family when you not been home for a while.

When I see people with foreign background in Sweden, gathered together and live in the same neighborhood and who wants to be near his family I can understand why.
We do the same when we are abroad, we are together whit people looking like us, speak the same language, and have the same customs. All festivals are celebrated together with compatriots or at least people from the countries that celebrate fairly similar ceremonies. it Is fun to learn from other traditions and to share with others, but usually we are so occupied with the celebration that we may forget to invite, or do not have time to let us invited. But if we got better at it, perhaps understanding for others’ traditions and customs became larger. So maybe we should start with it now and invite someone this Christmas…

I hope anyway that everybody takes it really easy this Christmas and do not shop over their assets, which is very easy.
A few years ago we calculate that it was cheaper to invite the whole family at Christmas dinner at a restaurant, than to buy all food and drink for a Christmas dinner at home. Then you do not have to take care of all the leftovers and avoid eating Christmas dinner for a week and avoids addition to throwing over half of the food we did not eat and therefore become too old.
Go out and eat Christmas dinner together and socialize with each other the time you win, now that you do not have to roll 7 000 meatballs and make “Jansson’s temptation” and prepare the ham and anything else you would have on the Christmas dinner at home.

Take it easy this Christmas and enjoy the holidays as you have…
